Developed by EA Orlando and published by EA Sports, this title represents the third game in the series since its return in 2024. A Historic Franchise Resurgence

The path to College Football 27 has been arduous. The series began in 1993 with Bill Walsh College Football before being rechristened NCAA Football 98 after EA acquired licensing rights. However, in July 2013, the NCAA announced it would not renew its licensing contract due to legal disputes regarding player likenesses. Consequently, the series was placed on hiatus in September 2013 after major conferences pulled their trademark licenses.

During this period, the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) announced it would extend its existing licensing deal with EA through 2017, allowing continuation without NCAA branding. In February 2021, Electronic Arts announced the series would return for next-gen platforms. Following the commercial success of the revival, EA Sports announced the continued annualization of the series. According to industry reports in January 2026, the series saw a 20 percent increase in active users compared to the previous year. The previous installment, EA Sports College Football 25, became the best-selling sports video game in US history based on dollar sales, cementing the franchise's modern dynasty.
