A Recruiting Promise Gone Wrong

The controversy traces back to former LSU coach Brian Kelly, who promised Pickett during his recruitment in December 2024 that he could wear No. 5 with the Tigers. Pickett, a five-star cornerback from Zephyrhills, Florida, had worn the number his entire life. However, Kelly chose not to issue the number because Daniels — who wore No. 5 during his Heisman-winning 2023 season — was not on board with another player wearing it. Kelly was fired on Oct. 26, 2025, after compiling a 34-14 record in four seasons.

Lane Kiffin Honors the Promise

New LSU coach Lane Kiffin allowed Pickett to wear No. 5 when the Tigers opened preseason practice, citing the promise made during his recruitment. "DJ is in No. 5, and that was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here, for him to sign here," Kiffin told reporters on Aug. 5. "I've done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and the people, so really I didn't have a decision to make. It was promised to the kid."

Daniels: 'You're Not Joe Burrow'

Daniels' spokesperson released a statement saying the family is "deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected" by LSU's decision. The No. 9 jersey worn by Joe Burrow — who won the Heisman and led LSU to a national championship in 2019 — has not been worn since he left. Kelly told ESPN he wasn't prepared to issue No. 5 to Pickett without Daniels' blessing, noting: "We didn't want to issue No. 9, so you can't treat one differently from the other." Daniels himself posted on Instagram that he is focused on the NFL season and hopes the issues can be "resolved privately."

Pickett Stands Firm

Pickett, who was a freshman All-American in 2025 after leading LSU with three interceptions, said he has worn No. 5 since he was four years old. His father, Damien Pickett, told The Advocate that the situation makes his son want to wear the number even more. "LSU has not said anything to us about the number, about us being able to wear the number," Damien Pickett said. "Coach Kiffin has been in full support of my son through this process."
