What Is the CFB 27 Chemistry System?
College Football 27 Ultimate Team (CUT) revamps how chemistry works. Instead of just stacking speed boosts, the CFB 27 chemistry system spreads bonuses across more attributes. Scheme and Team Chemistry boosts no longer impact Speed at all. In exchange, at 50/50 chemistry, you get +2 or higher boosts across a wider range of stats rather than the previous +1/+2 split. That means building a 50/50 theme team now makes your lineup stronger in more areas, even without the speed boost.
There are three types of chemistry in CUT: Team Chemistry (all 134 FBS teams), Scheme Chemistry (14 schemes like Air Raid, 4-3, 3-3-5), and Program Chemistry (program-specific bonuses like Cornerstones, Legends, or Phenoms). Each chemistry type provides several ratings boosts unlocked by reaching a certain number of instances in your lineup. These boosts apply to every player in your lineup who has the associated chemistry equipped.
Chemistry slots on player items are unlocked using Skill Points — or in some cases Coins or Training — giving you direct control over which bonuses your team gets. For more on lineup management, check out the Ultimate Team Lineup Guide.
Cornerstones: The Gem Affinity System
Cornerstones is the Season 1 launch program built around six Cornerstone Captains, each with a unique Gem Affinity. When you log in, you receive a Welcome Pack that lets you choose one of these six players for free. Each Cornerstone Captain boosts different attributes and fits into one of six chemistries. The player you pick is locked in permanently, so choose carefully.
All player items released during the Cornerstones program also carry a Gem Affinity. If your Cornerstones Captain is in the lineup and shares the same Gem Affinity as another Cornerstones player, that player's stats get a boost. Once you upgrade these players, Gem Affinity can also boost players based on position groups, even with items from other programs. LTD (Limited) cards and the Head-to-Head Champion reward can freely swap between all six Gem Affinities, making them the most flexible pieces of your roster.
The Cornerstones Field Pass has weekly objectives: passing yards, rushing yards, games played, and sacks. You need at least two Cornerstones players in your lineup — backups count. Completing all Week One objectives gives you three Cornerstone Skill Point Vouchers, and completing all milestones adds three more, for a total of six vouchers to accelerate your Cornerstone Captain's progression.
How Do Chemistries Work With the New Upgrade System?
Chemistries are now part of the same progression system as abilities and attributes. You use Skill Points — or alternative currencies like Coins or Training — to unlock chemistry slots on individual player items. Both slots and individual chemistries are usually limited by OVR and specific attribute thresholds. That means you may need to progress down upgrade paths before certain chemistry options become available.
This is a deliberate design choice. EA wants you to balance your Skill Point spending between Attributes and Equippables (abilities and chemistries) since they draw from the same SP pool. Spend on chemistry boosts and you delay attribute upgrades, and vice versa. Strategy items also play a role: core strategy items now mix buffs with debuffs, so you trade off one stat for another when optimizing your lineup around a specific chemistry build. This makes every decision about SP allocation matter more than ever before.
Skill Points and Dynamic Upgrade Paths
Skill Points (SP) are the foundation of player progression in CUT. Each player item has SP tied to it, earned by completing Objectives on Items, exchanging tokens or items, or purchasing with other currencies. SP can be spent on Dynamic Upgrade Paths, Attribute Upgrade Paths, Ability Slots, and Chemistry Slots.
Dynamic Upgrade Paths are the biggest change. These are based on position archetypes — for example, an East/West Playmaker Halfback path improves acceleration, change of direction, ball carrier vision, and juke ratings, while a Contact Seeker path focuses on trucking, break tackle, stiff-arm, and strength. Each upgrade step randomly increases a subset of ratings within that archetype, so two players starting at the same OVR can develop very differently. Attribute paths, by contrast, give you fixed stat increases at each step — you know exactly what you're getting.
Each item has a max OVR and attribute caps set by the path. A Speedster Wide Receiver path may cap Speed at 90, while a Route Artist path caps Speed at 88. Once an attribute hits its cap, it stops upgrading on that path. You can respec an item at any time to get back all spent SP, letting you try different builds without permanently losing resources. You can also upgrade multiple steps at once as long as you have enough SP.
Objectives on Items and EVOS
Objectives on Items let you earn additional Skill Points by completing gameplay goals tied to specific player items. These objectives are viewable directly from the lineup screen and during preplay, so you can track progression without leaving a game. You can favorite up to 16 item objectives — 8 on offense and 8 on defense — for real-time tracking during matches.
EVOS (Evolution Items) are coming after launch and expand what's possible even further. EVOS can increase a player's OVR cap, unlock new upgrade paths, add or improve abilities, expand chemistry options, and add more objectives. Some EVOS can be chained together, stacking multiple upgrades on a single player. This means a Day 1 starter can stay competitive deep into the season rather than being replaced by newer cards. The Free Chemistry Glitch and Launch Strategy
There is currently a chemistry glitch that lets you add team chemistry at no cost. Navigate to Upgrades, then Chemistry, and you'll see a chemistry option missing the usual 25,000 coin charge. Select UMass and apply the chemistry for free. This is your opportunity to build toward 50/50 theme team chemistry without spending a single coin. While the UMass team chemistry doesn't provide a speed boost — no team chemistry does in CFB 27 — the additional stat boosts from reaching 50/50 are still worthwhile.
Apply this glitch immediately, as it will likely be patched. The free chemistry lets you take advantage of the new chemistry system's wider stat distribution without the typical coin investment. Pair it with the Cornerstones Welcome Pack and the Season 1 Field Pass for a strong launch week roster.
For Cornerstones pack strategy, start with the Welcome Pack player but don't select immediately — wait for the community to confirm upgrade paths. Then complete the Cornerstones Field Pass weekly objectives for Skill Point Vouchers, grind the Head-to-Head event for sellable 81+ packs, and purchase boosters for Platinum Players and backup cards to fulfill lineup requirements. FAQ: How Do I Build Around Chemistry in CUT?
Start by picking your Cornerstones Captain and applying the free chemistry glitch to get your team chemistry rolling. Then focus on unlocking chemistry slots on your key players using Skill Points. Match your scheme chemistry to your playbook — a Spread offense benefits from Spread scheme boosts, while a 4-3 defense needs 4-3 chemistry. Build toward 50/50 for the highest tier of boosts, remembering that speed is no longer a chemistry stat but more attributes get +2 or higher. Prioritize upgrading your Cornerstone Captain first, use the six Skill Point Vouchers from the Field Pass, and keep an eye on EVOS announcements for long-term investment opportunities.
